IAM(S) Disappointed – A Recipe For Disaster
This past Wednesday, It was announced that Procter & Gamble is acquiring Natura Pet Products. This is a very sad day for pet parents and a major shift in the pet industry.
Natura is the maker of great foods like EVO, Karma, Innova and California Natural. It was a family run business since 1992. Natura owns their own manufacturing plants and were never involved in any pet food recalls. In order to keep the integrity of the company and free from undue influence, they refused to sell to big box retailers such as Petco, Petsmart and Walmart. They were a shining example of success through the independent retailer channel with a high quality product.
Now compare Natura to Procter & Gamble. P&G owns some of the largest names in pet food, IAMS and Eukanuba. They are sold at all the big box retailers and even at some liquor stores and mini-marts. Both brands were major offenders in the massive pet food recall of 2007 (http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/petfoodrecall/#Dog). The sourcing of cheap ingredients to make money led to the deaths of thousands of pets.
Beyond the issues of the food quality and ingredient integrity, Procter & Gamble’s IAMS has also been accused of inhumane animal treatment during the testing of their food products by animal activist organizations including the Indiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) and People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Here is some of the undercover footage of the IAMS practices. WARNING: This is really heart-breaking footage and may upset you. Original Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WucllIFy9iU.
No big secret, Procter & Gamble’s sole motivation is an obligation to shareholders to make a profit. I know this especially well from my years working at a hedge fund. As investors, we only wanted to see the management grow the bottom line. The cost is quality. The cost is our pets.
I am greatly disappointed in the news. Not because we carry most of the Natura lines, but rather because we are about to see this great company and its products destroyed over time. Leaving the consumers like us, even fewer options in the marketplace. The owners, the Rademakers, leave 25 years of building a reputable brand and now have cashed out to “enjoy the rest of their life without the risk and worry associated with operating a large and complex business”. Sadly, the Rademakers or the CEO Peter Atkins will not stay on in any capacity with the company after the deal closes. They will collect their checks and not look back.
I don’t anticipate any immediate changes by P&G because of the short term scrutiny they will be under to keep things running the same way Natura did. However, given the history of P&G in pet foods, it really is just a matter of time. It may not be as drastic as a change in the formula (though likely, in the not so distant future) but simple things that the consumer may never know and would make all the difference such as the sourcing of their ingredients and the integrity of the manufacturing process.
A lot of consumers also may not understand the pressures manufacturers will be placed under once they start to go into big box retailers. There are many examples of this in the pet food industry. Take for example Solid Gold. They were a leader in the holistic pet foods and in the independent channel. When they started selling into Petco, they ran into supply issues and had to change and move their manufacturing process. This is why, at Healthy Spot we avoid names that you find at these big box stores. The financial pressures to supply these stores often force the manufacturers to make cost cutting changes.
To make matters worse, Walmart recently announced a billion dollar initiative to move into the pet space which does not bode well for pet product manufacturers under the weight of the retail goliath. Did you know the world’s best selling dog food is Walmart’s very own Ol’ Roy? Other lines they carry included IAMS, Pedigree, Beneful & Purina. Compare the list of the names sold at Walmart to the names found on the recall list in 2007. Is it likely it is a major coincidence or rather a product of the financial pressure of the big box retailers?
With the independent retailers and pet parents shocked at the deal, Natura and P&G will attempt to persuade us all that they will be the same company with better resources. Consumers are smarter, we know better. It holds the same amount of weight of saying that a slow conservative driver passing over the keys to a driver with history of reckless endangerment will have the same results. After all, it is the same car. But again we know that the car is not the issue. It is the driver. With the changing of the ownership at Natura, in time you will see different results. Count on it.
At Healthy Spot, we will be proactively seeking new brands that remain independent to insure that we continue to provide the highest quality products made with the highest level of integrity. Since the deal doesn’t close until end of June and we anticipate little change immediately, we view this as an excellent opportunity to identify newer and better products that meet our strict standards. Also we still hope that, by some luck, the deal does not close. However if it does, we will not remain idle and will be ready for action.
We are saddened because we know that we may lose some customers as a result of our new strategy to replace the Natura lines out with comparable alternatives. For us, it is more important that we don’t lose our soul. We will remain true to who we are, our standards and what our role is. We are here to serve as a partner with the customer, not the manufacturer, to provide the best products available. P&G pet products have and will fall short of our measures.
As a consumer, we have the ability to make changes. It is critical for us to stay informed and make educated choices. What we buy, is our vote and our voice to these companies. Ask yourself the question, why would you want to continue feed your dogs brands that sell out for profit and may have questionable integrity? Why continue to give your dog the brands that have been involved in recalls and killed thousands of pets? Purchasing these brands is telling these companies that we are okay with their business practices. Doesn’t Spot deserve better?
At Healthy Spot, we understand that our dogs are more than just pets; they are family. They do deserve better and we are here to help.
That video is really depressing. Keep up the good work by shining a light on things like this and providing other more humane solutions.
Wow…how insightful. It’s really sad that big corporations don’t care about the devastation they wreak in pursuit of a little more profit. I actually feed my dogs EVO but will now be looking for alternatives. Thanks for keeping us aware of the issues.
Wow Andrew, this is terrible news! Thanks for sharing! I have one dog on California Natural and one on EVO and Karma- what do you suggest I switch to?
this is so disappointing. My dogs are on Innova and love it. I’ve notice a positive change in their coats as well. should i stock up before the formula is changed? Do you recommend any other brands?
Thanks for sharing this important information.
This IS eye-opening news, please keep up posted.
I used to feed my dog EVO – recently switched him to Orijen, thanks to Healthy Spot’s recommendations and he loves it!
Thank you for reading our thoughts. Over the next couple entries, I will be highlighting different options for the different lines of Natura including EVO, Innova and Cal Natural.
The deal does not close till the end of June so there is no immediate need to run out and stock pile or switch.
Please stay tuned and thank you for your reading and taking the time to leave a comment!
Very thoughtful and informative blog post. Way to go!
P&G is known for their animal testing even on all their other product. I agree its just a matter of time before their disregard for quality permeates into these other brands they just acquired.
Andrew – thank you for your integrity!
This whole article makes me sick! Clearly they are not focused on the greater good of our family members! Just on the greater good of what it will do to their pockets!
This is a great posting. You did a great job of showing exactly why this is such a bad deal for the pet industry. I guess it gives others a chance to rise and shine. I am secretly crossing my fingers that this deal falls through.
Thanks for the info!
This is so upsetting! Thank you Healthy Spot for doing the right thing and pulling this product from your shelves. It’s why we love you guys and drive out of our way to visit your stores!
I just saw the Healthy Spot store in Hollywood for the first time yesterday; looked it up on line; and saw this article. I am so thankful I read this, and disappointed at the news. I have three dogs. Two of them are on Innova (sr dog on Lotus), and they love it. I will definitely be reading “Thoughts from Andrew” to know when I should make the switch. And, I can’t wait to visit the store! Thank you.
@Dawn – thank you for taking the time to find out more about us. We are currently in the process of reviewing a lot of brands on the market and I will post some of our selections when we complete our due diligence. In the interim, I may write about some of the brands I feed my dogs so people know some of the options out there.
FYI… Did you know Lotus is a private label brand for Centinela? Most people buy the brand because someone at Centinela told them that the food would be the best option without full disclosure.
Stay tuned and thank you for your support!
@Nancy T – We try to do what’s right because we would want the same for our dogs. Thanks again for your support!
Had couple of small problems viewing the website in Firefox on the Mac, but apart from that loved the post.
[...] is an important article from Healthy Spot about the state of dog food. This news came out a month ago and I still don’t think enough [...]
Thanks for the heads up. We’ll try to get that fixed.
Thanks very much for this. I feed my pup Cal. Natural Herring and Sweet potato, so I will be switching for sure.
Thank you so much for this article. Really eye-opening. I used to purchase Purina from my vet (!) until a friend encouraged me to become more proactive in what my “baby” eats. After many hours of research and a few mistakes, I am feeding our little guy Sojos Complete. It is a dehydrated food and when you read the list of ingredients, it is a food that I could eat with no problems. I know these foods are more expensive, but I feel it is worth it.
As far as I’m concerned another one bites the dust. This sort of things happens every so often. When I first started training Eukanuba was the top of the line. Wouldn’t touch the stuff with a 10′ pole. Thanks for doing our jobs and keeping us up-to-date on your thorough research!
This was so upsetting. I couldn’t get thru the entire video.
Thank you for caring so much for our animals.
I am going to be fowarding this on to my friends so that can see what is happening and go to your store.
Thank you for being our eyes and ears for what is happening in the industry. I am going to forward this on to my friends who rescue pets and they will get this out to the rest.
Again, thank you.
Anita
Andrew – your comment regarding Lotus is spot on. Centinela highly recommended the Lotus brand to me and NEVER disclosed they own it. The food made my dog ill by aggravating his allergies. Had to spend a fortune at the vet to get it under control. Thank you for sharing this info.
@Mobius – Let us know if you need help finding a healthy alternative. We have a couple lines of food that we carry that can work and one we are bringing in that will fit as well. We’re here to help!
@Lynne Himelstein – Thank you for reading. It’s clear you’ve done some homework with foods. Sojos is a good food. If you using dehydrated foods, the Honest Kitchen is a great brand that we are big fans of. All out of a human grade plant in San Diego. Check out http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/ for more info.
@Anita – Thank you for your support. Please pass the word along as I feel consumers should have the right to know what’s going into their dog’s bowls.
@Amy – I am sorry to hear about your dog. I hope your dog is doing a lot better. It is no wonder that they NEVER disclose it. It isn’t the best product on the market, yet it is recommended to everyone like it is. If Centinela disclosed that they owned the food, I am sure that Lotus sales would drop significantly. Consumers have the right to know, especially when they put their trust in them to make a good recommendation for their pets.
Thank you for helping us stay informed…I just sent off my letter to P & G (that I meant to do 2 months ago) explaining to them why I am boycotting everything the sell! I didn’t realize how much stuff I buy from them…but after seeing that video, I vowed that I would not give them another penny.

I received this from an animal friend right after I purchased 2 bags, Innova and Evo Cat food. Are the cat foods under the same scrutinty as the dog foods? I would venture to guess that P & G will also change their manufacturing practices on their cat foods as well. Thank you for informing us pet parents. I feed our 14 yr old Aussie/Lab Mix-up (rescue) Wellness Sr. along with other healthy organic vegs, yogur and raw turkey. Hopefully, Healthy Pet, makers of Wellness are still doing a good job. Maybe it’s time to change our cats to Wellness foods as well? any thoughts?
@PAM – Wellness is a good brand but keep in mind the manufacture was bought out by the Berwind group, a private equity group.
This group also purchased Holistic Select and created the company WellPet. After the purchase of Wellness, the food was moved into Petco and now in Petsmart.
At Healthy Spot, we don’t carry the lines carried at these shops because we believe it can create the “Walmart effect” and pressure them to change formulas and reduce costs to make more money.
We saw this take place with other independent brands that made the move in Petco including Solid Gold.
There are great alternatives to Wellness and EVO, like Orijen, Acana and Mulligan’s Stew that you may want to take a look at.
Hope this helps!
